SUMMARY
“Lunapark” is a tragic love story set against the backdrop of war. A soldier meets his beloved at a fairground, their brief but powerful connection becoming his only source of hope amidst the horrors of battle. Longing to return to her, he deserts the war but is fatally wounded, leaving his promise to reunite at Lunapark unfulfilled. The song blends romance, loss, and haunting memory into a poignant ballad of love cut short by fate.
SONG HISTORY
When I wrote “Lunapark” back in 2019, the wars of the 2020s were still unthinkable. Yet the story of this anti-war song was originally set against the backdrop of World War I.
The idea came to me when I passed a nearby street I’d never really noticed before — Lunapark. What a strange name for a street, I thought. Curiosity sparked, I began to research and discovered that the adjacent sports ground had once been home to Germany’s largest fairground, back in 1913.
It didn’t last long. Only a year later, the war began, sweeping people into turmoil as men went off to fight and money grew scarce. But for a brief, shining moment, the Luna Park must have been a place of wonder and light — a symbol of joy before the darkness.
In the song, the glow of the amusement park draws a young soldier near, where he falls in love with a girl he meets there. After witnessing the horrors of war, killing no longer makes sense to him; he only longs to return and build a life with her. But fate intervenes — his sudden death ends their plans, though their love endures. Each night, she returns to the ruins of the fairground, where his spirit searches for her still.
Today, “Lunapark” feels more relevant than ever. The war in Ukraine has shown, once again, the futility of conflict — and surely many soldiers share the same longing as my song’s protagonist: the simple wish to go home to the ones they love.
“Luna Park” was once a common name for amusement parks in the early 20th century — and yes, there is a Luna Park in Russia, too.

(Intro piano only)
There I met you at Lunapark
Ghosts are howling through the dark
I tried to give you shelter
You tried to give me love
’t was not enough to survive
But love we tried
Ye we tried
(V1)
Me being a soldier on my way to war
Only days away from the cannon’s roar
I saw the bright lights of a nearby fair ground
I stepped inside
Feeling full of live
(Chorus 1)
And there I met you at Lunapark
Eyes bright like the stars that touched my heart
Two souls clung to each other
We knew it from the start
We had to meet again
At Lunapark
Lunapark
(V2)
We had to part I nearly went insane
Never knew if we would meet again
If I’d survive
The trenches carnage
I closed my eyes and I saw only you
(Chorus 2)
The day I met you at Lunapark
The shells kept on howling through the dark
I swore that if I ever
Saw the light again
I’d run the whole way back
To Lunapark
Lunapark
(Interlude)
Every day and night I dreamt of you at Lunapark
Every single day I cursed this pointless war
Every night I felt you waiting down at Lunapark
I could no longer take it
So I dropped my gun and tried to make it
(Chorus 3)
Back to where we met at Lunapark
The bullit pierced my back and slashed my heart
The last thing I remembered
Eyes bright like the stars
I promise to return to Lunapark
To Lunapark
(Instrumental strings)
Your memory is calling me back
Every night and day
And though you see can’t me my love
I’ll be there
To stay
(Outro piano only)
You’re still wandering through Lunapark
The carousels long gone
But not your love
I watch you from the shadows
Tears in your pale eyes
Once bright just like the stars
Over Lunapark
Lunapark
Lunapark
